This would be the section of the web site where you would find some sort of bio about me. That’s why they call it “about”. I could start by telling you about the place my family came from, the Netherlands, a place where working hard is expected, and being tough is a necessity. Then I could tell you how combining hard-working genetics with an 8th grade theater teacher who saw potential, started me on my path in theater tech – the most fun and hardest work I’d ever known. I could tell you about the long days and late nights, the never-ending cycle of build it, change it, toss it out, build it again, use it, toss it out, repeat. All the while working with exciting, creative people. I could tell you about the 8+ years at the Guthrie Theater in my 20s as a stage hand, carpenter, welder, rigger, stage manager, buyer and production manager – the greatest paid education you could ever ask for. Then I could mention how I slid in to a career in medical R&D – long story – and maybe not as thrilling as the theater, but very educational none-the-less.
I could tell you that when I was nearly 30 a good friend of mine moved back to Minneapolis from Atlanta, where he was an Art Director at BBDO, called me up and said, “come work with me – we’re starting an Advertising Agency and I think we need you.” Sounded like theater – but with better money. I didn’t realize it at the time, but theater production and advertising production are very similar. They both come down to three things: creative, budget and schedule. Get those three things right and you can open on Broadway or win a Cannes Lion. I could tell you all that, but instead I’ll let the work speak for itself, after all, the final product is all anyone really cares about.
Here are the rest of the stats – for anyone who wants to know more about the man behind the work: about 6’3”, 185lbs, married with two grown daughters, always down to work hard and make cool things.
